New Philips PC bats as all rounder

Johannesburg, 06 Apr 1998

In a move designed to net a greater share of the broad band PC market Philips Personal Computers is making its E8 series available through the local channel. The series, comprising four models ranging from Pentium 166MMX to Pentium II 233Mhz, is being punted as an all-rounder. For the Soho market quality 3D multimedia and communication capabilities are important; for the power user graphics/video performance and quality output capabilities are key. Nalini Singh, channel manager for PCs and Add-on cards at Philips PC, says there is a machine to suit all needs. "Soho users, while concerned about these technical specifics, are really looking at price/performance issues. They do not want to pay for something that will be of no use to them. The lower-end E8 models offer the key features but they bat strongly on price." The more advanced models ship standard with advanced Intel chipsets, 64MB of RAM and 128-bit PCI graphics card with 3D accelerators. "They also output to straight to television sets, a benefit from a business presentation standpoint," says Singh. Considering its broad target market the E8 series is versatile in its case construction - a simple switch of the drive bays allows it to assume the guise of a desktop or mini-tower model.
