Sitara Networks, a US-based network solutions provider, has set up shop in SA, and appointed Regal Virtual Solutions as its local distributor.
The company focuses on integrating applications and network infrastructure, and its flagship product, QoSWorks, will be targeted at enterprise, application service providers and Internet solution providers. This quality of service appliance server combines traditional caching (similar to Novell's caching server NCS) with policies, packet shapers (like Packeteer), a queuing system, and packet size optimisation.
Sitara notes that users can get a similar solution by buying disparate systems, such as Packeteer and NCS, but claims that it is the first to provide all of these services in one appliance.
Sitara says this application server will benefit companies running multiple applications - such as voice, video and e-mail - side-by-side with mission-critical applications.
"In recent testing, Sitara QoSWorks allocated bandwidth accurately according to set policies, and improved throughput for critical applications, while maintaining and improving the performance of existing network applications," says Kevin Tolly, president and CEO of the testing house The Tolly Group.
"Further testing showed that Sitara's Accurate Traffic Management delivered 19% higher aggregate throughput and was more accurate when enforcing policies that Packeteer's Pack Shaper 2000 for HTTP traffic over a 64kbps WAN."
Sitara has appointed Barry Gordon, previously with Unihold Business Solutions, as director for the region, and Earl van der Haar from CBSNet as technical director.
Prices for the QoSWorks range from R23 750 for a 64kbps device to R220 000 for the 45Mbps appliance.
