Dr Phil Mjwara has been appointed as the group executive responsible for research and development at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Mjwara is the head of the CSIR National Laser Centre, a position he has held since its inception in 2001.
Having completed his PhD at Wits University in 1995, Mjwara lectures at the Universities of Pretoria, Wits, Fort Hare and Unisa. He has also served on various advisory councils and review boards, including the secretariat to the National Advisory Council on Innovation.
He serves on the boards of the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Centre of Excellence (Strong Materials: Wits University) and the Laser Research Institute of Stellenbosch University.
He is VP of innovation for the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association and a general secretary of the Academy of Science of SA.
