PM Tech, the Johannesburg-based Oracle database management solutions, tools and outsourced services specialist, has launched a "remote database administrator" service targeted at companies in rural areas and those without the need for full-time specialists.
The software solution involves the constant monitoring and management of a customer`s database on a round-the-clock basis, explains Mike Leeuwen, a director of PM Tech. Trouble ticketing and escalation procedures can be automatically initiated in the event of irregularities.
"The service is based on a detailed SLA [service level agreement] which is formulated beforehand, says Leeuwen. "On-line reports are produced at regular intervals detailing a wide range of operational issues.
Leeuwen says there are growing numbers of companies in South Africa that cannot afford - or cannot attract - the necessary skills to run their computer systems which are growing in complexity in the wake of user demands for improved performance, increased capacities and more modern applications.
"These are companies that will benefit most from a remote management service. It allows them the peace of mind that comes from 24-hour monitoring and management at a fraction of the cost associated with on-site staff," he adds.
