Juniper Networks, a leading manufacturer of IP infrastructure systems, has introduced the latest additions to its IP router stable, the M5 and M10, as well as a new set of high-speed, dedicated access T1/E1 and channelised DS-3 interfaces and new access features for JUNOS release 4.1 Internet software.
The M5 and M10 Internet backbone routers offer wire rate performance with over ten times the forwarding and route lookup capacity, using only 25% of the power and space of existing dedicated access routers. The new platforms now allow service providers to deploy the same best-of-breed technology used in their core routers at the edge of their networks. The units are ideal for applications such as high-speed dedicated access aggregation or as peering points and complement Juniper's existing M-series systems. The units will also prove useful for metropolitan network applications (MANs) where providers build smaller scale versions of their wide area IP backbones to serve specific geographic areas. The high level policy, control and security features of the M-series routers allows operators to scale their metropolitan networks that connect local providers to national providers and deliver access to information located on the metro network.
Both the M5 and M10 routers feature Junipers Internet Processor II ASIC designed to enable complex services such as packet filtering for increased security and sampling to provide insight into network traffic patterns. The new T1/E1 and channelised DS-3 interfaces, along with the new JUNOS Release 4.1 are available for the entire M-series. The new products are designed to help reduce operational costs and increase efficiency by allowing the same JUNOS software to run across all Juniper Networks platforms. New features of JUNOS include rate limiting which reduces operations overheads by enabling the service provider to adjust bandwidth availability automatically on a per customer basis rather than having to deploy DSU equipment to manually adjust bandwidth. The result is substantial time and cost savings and enables providers to offer tiered and burstable-rate services to their customers.
