New Sun N1 Grid technologies to ease data centre management

Johannesburg, 23 Jun 2004

Continuing its work to reduce human intervention in the management of critical data centre resources, Sun Microsystems has announced new N1 Grid technologies and solutions that make it easier to deploy and manage enterprise grids to deliver network services.

Sun's N1 strategy is its vision for utility computing. It defines the connection and virtualisation of all computing resources into a single 'grid', allowing the resources to fluidly move across the enterprise to where they are needed.

New enhancements to Sun's N1 strategy include N1 Grid Engine 6, N1 Grid Console, N1 Grid Tool Kit, N1 Grid for SAP solutions, N1 Grid Blueprint and the availability of ready-to-implement grid computing solutions using the Sun Fire V20z Compute Grid rack system.

According to Tertius Bezuidenhout, national sales engineer manager at Sun Microsystems SA, these new offerings demonstrate Sun's leadership in opening up grid computing for enterprise applications and the progress made in our N1 Grid strategy.

"With the N1 Grid Tool Kit, developers can easily integrate and deploy their custom applications with the N1 Grid Service Provisioning System for reduced costs and time to market," he notes.

Sun's Fire V20z Compute Grid rack system can improve resource utilisation by up to 90% and reduces system implementation time from days to hours. Also, using this system, operating systems can be installed on 32 nodes in less than an hour.

"These new products will help organisations increase levels of utilisation of resources and speed of upgrades for operators of IT infrastructure. The N1 Grid enhancements include an extended core grid computing platform, a centralised control console to manage thousands of 'containers' - or parts of a grid - and the N1 Grid Tool Kit, which can extend a developer's ability to interact with components of the N1 Grid System. In addition, Sun has introduced an infrastructure solution that allows easy movement of resources, and a blueprint to guide implementation of N1 Grid Systems," he says.

The new products are part of the N1 Grid System, which provides all the core services for establishing, partitioning, provisioning and managing grids. The N1 Grid System optimises business services and infrastructure in accordance with dynamic business demands and IT requirements, while leveraging the new capabilities and features of the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), such as N1 Grid Containers and Predictive Self-Healing, to deliver a reliable foundation for the next generation of networked solutions.
