Refining its focus on the service provider market, Cabletron Systems has released a high-performance Integrated Access Device (IAD) that provides ATM connectivity and the integration of voice, video and data in a single platform.
"The SmartSwitch 1500 allows service providers and branch offices to take advantage of bandwidth intensive applications, extending the benefits of ATM to remote locations," says Martin May Cabletron Systems SA country manager.
"It is designed to deliver the performance and integration benefits of ATM over a wide area network (WAN) to users who require higher bandwidth and advanced services.
"For example, it enables service providers to offer high-speed connectivity at costs lower than traditional leased lines. Utilising Inverse Multiplexing over ATM (IMA), the SS1500 supports speeds greater than DS-1/E1, without the high costs associated with DS-3 broadband access.
"In addition, the SS1500 supports structured and unstructured Circuit Emulation Services (CES) and bandwidth provisioning, allowing service providers to deliver Quality-of-Service (QoS) levels for voice, video, and data applications," he says.
For the enterprise market, the SS1500 extends ATM networks to sites that do not support native ATM interfaces, enabling multi-service capabilities at branch office locations. Customers can also simplify network complexity and reduce costs by integrating voice and data services over a single ATM network.
The SmartSwitch 1500 compliments Cabletron`s high-performance ATM solutions family, including the SmartSwitch 9500, SmartSwitch 6500 and SmartSwitch 2500 for data centre, wiring closet and workgroup switching applications.
A recent study by the Yankee Group predicts that the ATM WAN switch market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 36 percent in the next five years, reaching approximately $7 billion by 2003. The study indicates that the convergence of voice and data technologies will be a key factor for driving this growing market.
