New UIF, directors PAYE legislation made easy with Brilliant Payroll

Brilliant Business Systems, a Softline company, have released a comprehensive payroll maintenance upgrade that addresses recent labour legislation changes. The add-on payroll module fully integrates with Brilliant's flagship accounting software product, BrilliantAccounting version 11.

Addressing recent South African statutory amendments, Brilliant Payroll has been updated to make provision for the changes in directors' pay as you earn (PAYE) tax and skills development levy (SDL), weekly or monthly electronic Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) submissions as well as calculating employee tax contributions in line with the new income tax tables.

"Administrating a company's employee payroll has becoming increasingly complex due to the changes in local labour laws as well as tax and other statutory requirements. Brilliant Business Systems is one of the first local software developers to release a maintenance upgrade that addresses new legislation. This software upgrade is also one of the most comprehensive solution offerings available to date," says Tanya Miranda, director of Brilliant Business Systems.

UIF legislative changes are effective as from April 2002. Companies and its employees will have to make a maximum monthly contribution of R80.99 per staff member. In addition, organisations are required to submit their UIF monthly statements and payments electronically to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). "Brilliant Accounting and its updated payroll module is compatible with the electronic filing hub created by SARS to enable public sector organisations to submit information and payment electronically," says Miranda.

Miranda also explains that directors' remuneration has become subject to monthly contributions to PAYE and SDL as of 1 March 2002. "This decision by SARS affects directors of private companies and members/officials of close corporations (CCs) who perform similar duties to those of private company directors. Brilliant Accounting users are able to make the necessary conversions and calculations with a click of a button using their payroll application," concludes Miranda.

As part of Brilliant Business Systems' subscription-based sales model, users of its standard payroll package will receive the maintenance upgrade automatically and free of charge.

Additionally, Brilliant Accounting users can look forward to the launch of a Microsoft SQL-enabled version of Brilliant Accounting. This client-server version will support between two and 50 users with ease, allowing growing businesses the unique opportunity to follow a seamless upgrade path when they require increased scalability and functionality. Also, businesses will save on the massive costs of re-implementation and training for a bigger accounting solution.
