3Com SA has announced an 11Mbps wireless building-to-building bridge targeted at multi-building network applications in environments such as education, healthcare, airport precincts and construction.
It is said to provide an easy-to-use solution for connecting hard-to-wire sites, multiple buildings within a campus setting, or temporary networks to the LAN.
Chris van Niekerk, 3Com SA MD, says that as businesses and educational institutions bring network connectivity to the far reaches of their organisations, they are often faced with new or temporary facilities that are not connected by cables.
"Existing wireless bridging solutions can often be expensive and complex devices - too cumbersome for the task of providing simple inter-building connectivity," he says.
"As a result, many organisations have shied away from using this very practical technology to get new or temporary sites connected.
"By building simplicity into a wireless bridging solution, 3Com enables organisations to implement wireless across a campus with confidence," he adds.

With point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connectivity options, the wireless building-to-building bridge allows users to transfer information between two buildings or multiple buildings across a campus.
Multiple antenna options allow the 3Com 11Mbps wireless building-to-building bridge to transmit distances of up to 1 300m via Omni-Directional antennas, and 4 100m using directional antennas. The bridge is easily configured and easy-to-manage.
From a security perspective, the 3Com 11Mbps wireless building-to-building bridge supports both 40-bit and 128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protocols. The wireless bridge is also transparent to virtual private network protocols. It uses a specialised encapsulation protocol to avoid conflicts with other tunnelling protocols.
