3Com Corporation, a tier-one provider of networking products, was selected to provide connectivity to the 2002 Men`s Volleyball World Cup, which is taking place in Argentina from 28 September to 13 October. Teams from 24 countries representing every continent are competing for the coveted first place.
The 3Com Gigabit Ethernet network connects the main venue - the Luna Park stadium - a 24/7 online international press centre and the secondary locations in Mar del Plata, Rosario, Salta and San Juan, providing journalists and organisers with quick access to the Internet and to tournament information.
The 1 300 journalists that are covering the 2002 Men`s Volleyball World Cup can access the Net thanks to the 3Com network installation inside the press centre in Luna Park, as well as in the stands. The 24/7 online press centre is located in the Buenos Aires YMCA as well as secondary venues outside the city, allowing reporters to send and receive news instantly, as the matches are played. Furthermore, the network connects the desktops installed around the courts in Luna Park, where information and statistics about every match and player is continuously updated in real-time. This information is entered into the Volley Information System (VIS), which is inspected by the International Volleyball Organisation before each match.
The 3Com network also enables the organisers and administrative staff to access Internet, e-mail and their own management system.
3Com designed the network specifically for the tournament. In the central location in Luna Park, 3Com deployed a Gigabit Ethernet network backbone over copper cables using the SuperStack 3 4000 product family and 10/100 mb technology to connect the workstations to the SuperStack 3 3300 switches placed at the edge of the network. The network features Quality of Service (QoS) standards and optimises the available bandwidth.
Additional SuperStack 3 3300 switches were installed in the online press centre and the secondary venues in Mar del Plata, Rosario, Salta and San Juan, to support Gigabit Ethernet connections and QoS.
The 3Com solutions were installed by Sistemas y Montajes, a company that specialises in technology implementations for sporting events.
