Newspapers printed on new Oc'e Colour Technology

Johannesburg, 22 Apr 2010

The newspaper industry is struggling to reduce costs and compete with online news delivery and declining readership. One well known South Africa newspaper has even gone so far as to reduce its cover price to help boost readership. Some publishers are adding digital printing to provide extra income streams in an increasingly tough marketplace.

Oc'e is the market leader in short run digital newspaper printing and Oc'e technology has produced more than 20 million newspapers worldwide. This number is set to rise significantly with the introduction of the super-productive JetStream inkjet colour technology.

The Oc'e JetStream family has print speeds from 675 to 2 020 A4 pages per minute and represents a cost-effective approach, with results that outshine traditional newspaper printing methods. Digital printing workflow also offers a speed advantage to help newspaper publishers compete with faster turnarounds.

“Domestic newspaper production in digital short runs or special editions in full vibrant colour at economic cost level offer prospering business models to the publishing sector, even in a period of economic downturn,” says Sebastian Landesberger, executive vice-president of Oc'e Production Printing.

Oc'e has strengthened its position in the emerging short-run digital newspaper print market by recently signing an agreement with a leading Spanish publisher that will result in more titles being printed digitally in one location than at any other digital production site in the world. This agreement will see the installation of an Oc'e JetStream 2200 inkjet colour Web press at a publisher located some 100km outside Madrid. This will be the world's first short run production site for domestic titles in colour, with average daily print runs of 6 000 80-page colour newspapers. Up to 40 titles - a mixture of dailies, weeklies and monthlies - will be produced on the Oc'e JetStream. The first newspapers are due to roll off the presses in May.
