Nigerian youths get IT scholarship

No fewer than 12 000 Nigerian youths are expected to benefit from the over N100 million IT empowerment scholarship project floated by local IT training institute KarROX Nigeria to empower Nigerian youths, says Vanguard.

The aim of the project, the KarROX Nigeria IT Empowerment scholarship, is to help bridge the skill and knowledge gap that exists among Nigerian youths.

According to the company, the fund will enable beneficiaries to be trained in various , and modules with multiple platforms and technologies by world leaders in ICT like Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, CompTIA and Sun Microsystems, among others.

Huawei donates GSM lab to university

The Bangladesh, India, branch of China's Huawei Technologies has signed an agreement with Bangladesh's University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for setting up a wireless communication lab and training centre in the university, says China View.

According to Zhang Hui, chief representative of Huawei in Bangladesh, Huawei will donate $3 million worth of GSM equipment to BUET to set up a GSM lab in the university as a part of its corporate social responsibility.

Hossain Zillur Rahman, education adviser of Bangladeshi caretaker government, said at the signing ceremony, "There are two messengers coming from this ceremony, one is the new type of co-operation between business and academies, one is corporate social responsibility becomes a reality from a seminar discussion." Rahman added that Huawei was the first company to co-operate with a learning academy, and he hoped that other companies will learn from it.

Entrepreneurs meet queen

Representatives of companies that had won The Queen's Awards for Enterprise 2008 attended an evening reception on 14 July hosted by the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace, reports PublicTechnology.net.

The winners, both large and small, come from almost every corner of the UK and represent the full range of industrial and commercial endeavour, products and services.

Technology-driven social entrepreneurs who won awards were Zulfiqar Ali, who has drawn on his business experience in leading technology companies to influence regeneration and enterprise in the deprived area of Rochdale, Lancashire; and Paul Barry-Walsh, a successful entrepreneur and IT multimillionaire, who set up the Fredericks Foundation in 2001, a registered charity to provide start-up support, loan finance and mentoring for those in financial hardship including the unemployed, single parents, ex-offenders and disabled people.
