South African home workers or small business owners can now host their own Web sites, set up their own e-mail systems and protect their computing environments from Internet security threats - all with the help of Sun Microsystems' recently released Cobalt Qube 3.
The Cobalt Qube 3 is a cost-effective plug-and-play networking solution and a complete Internet and intranet server in a box. It provides all the tools and applications needed to leverage 'always-on' Internet connections and Web-enable home networks or small business environments.
"The advanced features and additions to the new Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance sees Sun providing a robust solution to SA users that features all the levels of expertise needed to meet their networking specifications," comments Stefano Mattiello, managing director of Sun Microsystems SA.
The appliance can be used for sharing files, resources, or documents across a network or for hosting a company's e-mail, launching a Web site, or serving as a secure gateway to the World Wide Web.
"It makes it easy to bring the full benefits of Internet computing to anyone, anywhere."
Designed for today's typical computing households or small businesses with two or more systems, the Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance can be quickly set up to connect PCs and Macintosh computers in a local area network (LAN), thereby enabling these systems to take advantage of shared resources such as printing and Internet connections.
To ensure protection against Internet security risks such as viruses, hackers, and privacy threats, the Qube 3 includes a built-in firewall as well as virtual private networking (VPN) support. The firewall can easily be configured to protect private data while giving users full Internet access.
Added to this, the server appliance enables work-at-home employees or professionals at remote sites to securely access the corporate network from virtually any Windows PC.
"Our world is becoming more virtual and SA is no exception. This is why solutions such as the Cobalt Qube 3 is viable as it is a 'no mess, no fuss' option that keeps users on track with today's fast-paced Internet developments," concludes Mattiello.
