The Nobel Foundation has selected Cisco Systems as its Internet technology partner for a broad-reaching initiative aimed at technically developing the Nobel e-Museum (NeM) in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes.
The Nobel e-Museum (www.nobelprize.org) is a virtual museum of science and culture established in 1995. It uses databases, text, images, audio and video documents as well as 3D virtual reality and webcasts to inform about the work of more than 700 winners of Nobel Prizes awarded since 1901. It also functions as the official Web site of the Nobel Foundation.
Cisco will provide Internet technology and expertise, which will help the Nobel Foundation expand and enhance its virtual museum by upgrading networking capabilities and allowing for dynamic new content.
A new robust, scalable infrastructure will handle global Web traffic, offering increased access to educational material and other features including: online Nobel lectures, webcasting of the annual December Nobel Week activities, video-on-demand of Nobel Prize events, as well as high quality Web publishing.
Cisco will also provide network technology, equipment and services that will enable the Nobel Foundation to take full advantage of the Internet in its daily operations. This technology will allow the NeM and the Nobel Foundation to develop an internal network technology that enables scaling, growth and functionality.
"Our relationship with Cisco provides the Nobel Foundation with an opportunity to develop the Nobel e-Museum. It will also contribute to explaining the discoveries that created the fundamentals of Information Technology. This content will be part of a new section of NeM called Science and Technology," said Michael Sohlman, Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation. "Millions of visitors will enjoy higher technical quality, and thanks to Cisco, more dynamic e-learning content."
"Cisco is honoured to be working with the Nobel Foundation to promote innovation and excellence in human behaviour," said Bill Weber, general manager, Cisco systems sub-Saharan Africa. "Together we will harness the power of the Internet and education, the two great equalisers in life, to spotlight revolutionary advancements in science and culture."
