Nokia in deal with Kuwaiti group

Johannesburg, 31 May 2005

Kuwait`s Wataniya Telecom this week signed a deal with Nokia for the provision of advanced technologies that will enhance the Middle East company`s and pave the way for "beyond 3G" technology.

Nokia currently provides Wataniya Telecom with and core networks technology.

"Nokia`s technologies will support a new category of services that, we believe, our customers will find compelling," says Harri Koponen, GM and CEO of Wataniya Telecom.

The Nokia network will support the "beyond 3G" high-speed packet access technology (HSPA), which paves the way for Internet access at speeds of up to 2Mbps in the first phase. This compares to typical dial-up access speeds of 56Kbps and "broadband" ADSL fixed Internet access speeds of 1Mbps, Koponen says.

HSPA is an advanced communications protocol that consists of two subsets: high-speed uplink packet access and high-speed downlink packet access. HSPA takes mobile networks beyond the 384Kbps data speeds of currently defined 3G technology.
