Nominations for the 2012 IT Leading Employer Award are now open.
The award recognises organisations that understand the value of their people and that provide the leadership necessary to engage their people to drive business success.
Winners of the award will be revealed at the Computer Society of SA (CSSA) President's Awards, on 8 November.
Gail Sturgess, senior consultant at TalentAlign, says the awards have been running since 2008, as a partnership between the CSSA and TalentAlign.
She explains that the CSSA, as the professional body for IT practitioners in SA, and TalentAlign, an organisation focused on driving business performance through people, both focus on the value of people to the organisation.
"The award is intended to acknowledge organisations that demonstrate their commitment to their people," Sturgess says.
She also notes that any organisation with IT people, whether an IT company or an IT department in a company, is eligible to enter.
"In fact, the more the better. Once they have registered, we supply them with a link to a questionnaire set up only for that company. The company gets as many of its employees as possible to enter to complete the questionnaire.
"It is based on the engagement survey, but with additional questions relating to IT. The results of the questionnaire give an indication of the quality of leadership in the organisation. The award goes to the company with the highest score. If there is more than one with the same score, preference is given to the highest number of participants," Sturgess explains.
The top three companies each get a certificate, and the winner gets a trophy. "They also get the recognition of being an Employer of Choice in the IT industry in SA. With the skills shortage, this is important," Sturgess notes.
According to Sturgess, international research has shown, over and over again, that it is the quality of leadership in an organisation that dictates the level of engagement of the people of the organisation, and it is the level of engagement of employees that is a predictor of organisational success in the future.
"This award recognises organisations that are making that connection and striving to achieve business effectiveness through their people."
The previous winners were: FoschiniData, SQS Group SA (which has won twice) and Yellowtail Software.
