Nominations for the category "Top minister with an ICT portfolio", for this year`s ICT Achievers` Awards, have been announced.
The award seeks to honour the African minister who has achieved the most progress in promoting the use of ICT to enable economic growth and social improvement in their country.
This year`s criteria are:
* Policies that the nominee has put in place to ensure growth and ICT usage.
* How has the nominee ensured that a fair proportion of their country`s budget is spent on ICT?
* Major projects and initiatives focusing on ICT that the nominee initiated.
* Implementation of ICT projects, as well as alignment with the country`s growth objectives.
* How has the nominee promoted accessibility to ICT?
* How has the nominee ensured that ICT is a regular item on the cabinet agenda?
* The steps the nominee has taken to ensure that a legal framework is put in place to promote ICT in the country.
* The policies the nominee has specifically developed to enhance ICT development rather than inhibit it.
* The efforts the ministry has made to promote local ICT companies, as well as empowering women, the youth and the disabled.
The following ministers have been nominated:
* Abel Chambeshi - minister of works, communications and transport, Zambia
* Joel Kaapand - minister of communications, Namibia
* Motsoahae T Thabane - minister of communications, science and technology, Lesotho
* Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi - minister of communications, science and technology, Botswana
* Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri - minister of communications, SA
The winner of the award will be announced at a gala event on 25 November in Johannesburg.
The annual ICT Achievers` Awards is organised by ForgeAhead, in association with the Department of Communication and the SABC.
