In a keynote speech at NetWorld+Interop `98, Nortel Networks CEO John Roth and president Dave House will lay out a vision of the unification of data and telephony and how it will make anywhere-anytime communication a reality for the entire world.
The speech is the highlight of a powerful presence by Nortel Networks at Networld+Interop `98, the leading trade show for the computer networking industry. Networld + Interop `98 marks the first major trade show presence by Nortel Networks after its August 31 acquisition of Bay Networks.
Nortel Networks will demonstrate its commitment to its Unified Networks capability by demonstrating new desktop-to-desktop data networking solutions, innovative high-speed wide area networking solutions, voice-over-IP solutions (which enable voice traffic to travel on the Internet and private data networks), and end-to-end network management of both data and telephony networks.
Nortel Networks is also the largest sponsor of the show`s InteropNet, providing over US$5 million (about R30-million) in leading-edge equipment and network support.
InteropNet is the largest short-term, real-time data network, featuring equipment from more than 100 vendors and demonstrating interoperability between many different networking technologies. For the first time, Nortel Networks will be providing telephony products to a network that has typically been dominated by data-only technologies.
Nortel Network`s vision of Unified Networks creates greater value for customers worldwide by delivering integrated network solutions spanning data and telephony. This integration will enable customers to deliver new network services and meet ambitious financial objectives, while evolving to a common packet-based (IP, frame, cell) network infrastructure.
The focus of the Unified Networks capability is to seamlessly integrate voice, video and data using diverse IP and telephony technologies. Unifying of these historically separate worlds will help customers respond to escalating demands for high bandwidth, while reducing the cost and complexity of maintaining separate network infrastructures.
Unified Networks will also combine the time-to-market and agility customers expect in the enterprise data market with the backbone capacity and reliability that are essential in telecommunications network environments.
Ultimately, Unified Networks will use the Internet to enable "anytime, anywhere" communication, enhancing productivity and opening up new global business opportunities for enterprises and individuals.
The Wednesday afternoon keynote address by Roth and House, titled "A New Era of Networking," will show how the combined expertise of Nortel and Bay Networks creates a company uniquely skilled to remove the boundaries between data communications and telephony.

Nortel Networks will be featuring a broad range of LAN, WAN and telephony solutions at the show, and will demonstrate the integration of key technologies across its product lines, including Quality of Service (QoS) and end-to-end network management.
Nortel Networks will also announce several new products, including:

- Two new additions to the Centillion* LAN-ATM switching family that enhance Token-Ring switching support, protecting customer investments in legacy environments
- Phase 3 of Passport* 4400, which brings this product line`s market-leading benefits of reliability, QoS and network cost savings to small-to-midsize, multi-site networks
- Advanced QoS capabilities for the Versalar* IP Access Switch 15000, enabling network service providers to build scalable, business-class Internet services
- Version 2.0 of the Contivity* Extranet Switch software that includes support for branch office locations (LAN-to-LAN VPN), split-tunneling, and use of digital certificates for authentication
- VDSL Broadband Access portfolio announced with NB Tel as alpha site for digital video and high-speed Internet access
- Multi-service, multimedia optical network solutions for seamlessly connecting enterprises over metropolitan and backbone networks
