Nortel Networks and IBM unveiled new joint solutions that will allow established and emerging service providers to address the dynamic new challenges of eBusiness and applications hosting, allowing them to outsource the entire Internet and eBusiness infrastructure of an enterprise at SUPERCOMM 2001 in Atlanta this week.
Called `Network Solutions for eBusiness,` the joint solutions unite Nortel Networks leading Optical Internet and Optical Ethernet capabilities with IBM `s eBusiness infrastructure products and services in a fully architected, reliable IP (Internet Protocol) networking infrastructure. With these offerings, service providers can rapidly scale their infrastructures to offer data centre applications using optical transport, helping them deliver high-speed managed eBusiness applications to their enterprise customers.
Beyond handling basic functions such as storage, e-mail and remote access, Network Solutions for eBusiness will feature mission-critical, carrier-grade elements such as security, Quality of Service (QoS), content distribution, dynamic caching, virtual private Ethernet, and content intelligent switching. Its flexibility can also enable revenue-generating managed services such as e-commerce.
"With this solution, we will continue to break the bandwidth bottleneck in the metro area, allowing emerging and established service providers to tackle the multitude of business and technical challenges they face in today `s fiercely competitive Internet and data services environment," said Sirshem Moodley, Technical Operations Officer, Nortel Networks.
"Through the utility of Optical Ethernet, we can extend the speed and reliability of optical directly into the enterprise," Moodley said. "At the same time, service providers can scale and expand their current portfolios to offer reliable, cost-effective solutions to their enterprise customers, and to profit from the high-performance Internet."
Network Solutions for eBusiness is a flexible, scalable set of solutions that will integrate easily with existing network architectures. It will help emerging service providers to establish themselves in the marketplace, and will also help established service providers to expand their managed services portfolios to enable increased revenues with lower implementation costs.
"Network Solutions for eBusiness addresses the growing need for enterprises to build and maintain robust, competitive infrastructures," said Kneko Burney, director, e-Business Infrastructure, Cahners In-Stat. "With it, they can meet increasing end-user demands, benefiting from reduced costs through a more flexible, simplified infrastructure, streamlined implementation and support, and reduced time-to-market."
Network Solutions for eBusiness leverages IBM`s leading eBusiness infrastructure with Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet strength.
This joint effort builds on an existing relationship between IBM Global Services and Nortel Networks. Enterprise customers are already taking advantage of IBM Global Services, the largest global reseller of Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5300, enabling faster, simpler and more cost-effective enterprise deployment of DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) networks.
