A memorandum of understanding between Nortel Networks and leading PCS network operator SUNDAY on the deployment of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for wireless data applications and the co-development of new wireless data and multimedia services, will facilitate the introduction of the Wireless Internet to Hong Kong.
Ross Lau, president, Wireless Solutions for Nortel Networks in Asia, said that through the alliance between the two companies, mobile subscribers in Hong Kong "can expect to be among the first in the world" to enjoy the benefits of high-speed wireless data and multimedia.
The Nortel Networks GPRS platform enables SUNDAY and other operators to function as full Internet Service Providers (ISPs), complete with Wireless Internet portals and e-commerce capabilities. It also supports Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and wireless data services at speeds up to 170 kbits/sec -- 12 times faster than conventional services.
Nortel Networks` GPRS solution is based on its widely deployed Passport and Contivity Extranet switches, which provide reliable, cost-effective packet data services. These platforms also ease the eventual transition from GPRS to even faster, third generation (3G) radio technology within SUNDAY`s core IP (Internet Protocol) network.
