Nortel Networks has expanded the Wide Area Networking (WAN) interface on its Norstar platform with the introduction of the Norstar Data Interface. This technology offers customers increased interoperability by providing a local and wide area networking interface.
"The Norstar Data Interface connects existing data networks to the Norstar business communication system for cost-effective unified enterprise networking," explains Doug Batchelor, general manager of Nortel Networks` Enterprise Solutions line of business in South Africa.
Businesses with small sites and branch offices will be able to use the Norstar business communication system to consolidate voice and data traffic into a common network connection. This can significantly reduce the cost and complexity of equipment procurement as well as lower operational and management costs.
"With the Norstar Data Interface, customers can take advantage of industry standards, making it easier for small-site and multi-site customers to implement a Unified Networks solution," Batchelor says. "This provides our customers a one-stop shopping alternative for a complete voice and data networking system that is designed to grow with their business needs."
Nortel Networks` Norstar Data Interface is an external peripheral device that integrates the Norstar Modular Integrated Communications System (MICS) with a customer`s existing Nortel Networks Baystack router or other third-party data network equipment using standard serial interfaces such as V.35, EIA-530 and RS-449. The Norstar Data Interface enables sharing of a private or universal T-1 for both voice calls and data traffic so that customers can reduce line charges and maximise the capacity of a single network connection as opposed to maintaining.
