Novell gives partners a new identity

Salt Lake City, Utah, 23 Mar 2005

Any independent software vendor (ISV) could benefit from building on Novell`s Services Foundation (ISF), said a spokesman on the second day of BrainShare US in Utah.

Novell`s Identity-Driven Computing, now a year old, permeates its software and is based on the idea that all enterprise resources must have an identity, for secure and rule-based access.

The company now wants other ISVs to complement its offerings and build their programs on its platforms in ways that make full use of customers` identity-centric investments.

Frank Auger, Novell VP for product management and marketing (Nsure and exteNd products), told ITWeb that Novell is talking to "lots of ISVs" about the secure access and management space, but would not disclose the nature of discussions.

"Look at our , Trusted Network Technologies [TNT], for an idea," he said. "TNT has developed identity-based access, using our ISF architecture, which inspects the identity of the user down to IP packet level."

Another theoretical example would be Symantec, recently the owner of Veritas, he conceded. "Symantec, like many other ISVs, can benefit from building their programs on ISF.

"We`re saying Novell will build identity and access management and security solutions, but not all of them. We will work with ISVs - commercial and open source ISVs - to create solutions that leverage customers` identity management investment."
