Novell, MS battle continues

Novell is to continue its battle to win customers from Microsoft, despite a recent alliance between the companies, reports News.com.

According to the report, Novell is encouraged by the muted market reaction to Vista and plans to win as much market share from Microsoft as it can.

Novell hopes to take advantage of the partnership to get to know customers and hopefully win business, but once a customer has made a decision on which platform to run, the companies will work together.

Palm Treo vulnerable to attack

Symantec warns that some versions of the Palm Treo carry security flaws that could allow a person to access data even when the handheld is locked, reports News.com.

According to Symantec, the Palm Treo models 700p, 680 and 650 contain the security flaws, but Palm is yet to release a fix to address the problem.

The vulnerabilities could allow anyone to use the "find" feature to locate data, even if the Treo is locked, according to a posting on the SANS Institute's Internet Storm site.

Blu-ray recorder released

Although there is still no clear winner in the battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray, PC Mag says the release of the first Blu-ray recorder from Sharp makes the fight a little more even.

Like the Toshiba 1TB HD-DVD recorder released in June, Sharp's BD-HP1 Blu-ray Disc Player is to debut in the Japanese market in March.

The device can record only to single-layer Blu-ray discs, which can hold up to three hours of HD content and as much as 6.5 hours of standard TV content. The unit uses MPEG-2 compression to store recorded content, but unlike the Toshiba unit, there is no reported on-board storage.
