Novell to publish Fossa document
Novell plans to publish the architecture document of Fossa, its long-term strategy for the management and deployment of resources both within and outside the enterprise, says NetworkWorld.
Novell announced in March that it was working on a project, code-named Fossa, that would let users run their workloads by mixing and matching physical and virtual machines, management tools, identity services, collaboration software and open source operating systems.
The document will be outlined to open source developers later this year. The company expects participation of the open source community will be important for creating some of the technologies for the Fossa strategy, said Jeffrey Jaffe, executive VP and CTO of Novell.
Asia Pacific looks to open source
Open Source ERM and CRM software are becoming popular among small and medium-sized businesses in the Asia Pacific region, says Enterpriser.
An end-user study by market researcher IDC found lack of vendor lock-in, access to source code, open source network support, and traditional cost factors are driving the adoption of open source ERM and CRM applications in the region.
"Open source ERM and CRM applications are still in the embryonic stage in this region with small and medium-sized organisations being the early adopters," says Ridhi Sawhney, market analyst of IDC's Asia Pacific Enterprise Applications Research.
Hyperic upgrades for cloud computing
Open source management software provider Hyperic has introduced an upgrade to its platforms that lets IT managers monitor virtual environments, better plan for capacity and track performance of services delivered via cloud computing, reports NetworkWorld.
Many industry analyst firms argue the cloud computing pay-per-use model for compute, storage and other resources will attract more enterprise customers in coming years.
Market research firm IDC forecasts spending on cloud services will reach $42 billion in the next five years, capturing 12% of IT spending growth in 2012.
