Novell will outline future directions for NetWare at its annual BrainShare conference in Salt Lake City from March 21-26. Early versions of two future products code-named 6 Pack and Modesto will take corporations and organisations into the next millennium with trusted, scalable, Web-based networking.
According to Novell corporate business strategist Stafford Masie 6 Pack will build upon the strengths of Novell`s NetWare 5, the highly acclaimed pure IP server operating system that began shipping last September. "6 Pack will provide our customers with greater network performance, scalability and management through multi-processor, enabling all of NetWare`s core networking services."
6 Pack will incorporate Novell Directory Services (NDS) version 8 (v8), Novell`s next generation, highly- scalable Internet directory for managing both Internet and enterprise applications. NDS v8 will provide companies with the ability to manage millions of objects on one server with unprecedented performance, reliability and security. 6 Pack will also optimise server management capabilities the same way that directory-based Z.E.N.works revolutionised desktop management.
Novell has already seen high interest among computer hardware vendors for 6 Pack. As a major partner, Compaq Computer Corporation will be showcasing upcoming 8-way server technology at BrainShare that will take advantage of 6 Pack`s benefits including improved processor optimisation and performance.

"Novell`s NDS v8 and 6-pack combined with Compaq`s upcoming 8-way technology will deliver breakthrough performance for the enterprise directory and infrastructure critical to customers businesses."
Modesto, originally announced at last year`s BrainShare conference, is Novell`s next generation 64-bit server operating system designed to run on Intel`s future IA-64 processor family beginning with the Merced processor. This year Novell will be the first vendor in the computer industry to demonstrate an application and 64-bit server operating system on a Merced software development environment.
Novell has been actively working with Intel toward the simultaneous release of Modesto with Intel`s Merced processor targeted for mid-2000 production.
"6 Pack will be the foundation for trusted, scalable, Web-based networks by optimising the benefits of the directory as well as the latest 8-way technology," said Masie. "Modesto is focused on leveraging Intel`s IA-64 architecture from a networking perspective. These systems are going to drive the next generation of Web-based computing."
