NSS's ITIL implementation workshops a first for Africa

Johannesburg, 03 Nov 2006

Rivonia-based service management specialist NSS, which pioneered the concept of simulated business training for ITIL theory in South Africa, has become the first practitioner on the continent to deliver the sought-after "How to implement process through ITIL Best Practice" adoption.

The first workshop saw high profile organisations such as Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, Virgin Mobile and several large financial institutions at the workshop, which is aimed at fulfilling the notion that in order for any process to work, the customer needs to be in the driving seat and mentored, rather than simply have yet another line of ICT "consultants" lining up at the turnstiles, ready to snatch their pound of flesh.

"We're taking service management to the market in a way that focuses on many of the challenges facing both internal service providers and external suppliers," says CEO Lynda Odendaal.

"South Africa is a rapidly maturing market which defies pigeon-holing as an emerging nation. We are great at adopting new technologies and concepts - as well as creating our own solutions. We have top people in organisations raring to ensure service improvement through best practice application. Many have learned about ITIL through courses we and our competitors have offered ... and now they're ready to be move ahead."

Which is where the workshops come in. Odendaal says the intensive two-day workshop uses practical examples and NSS expertise to explain the "how" of enabling change and process improvement as well as the technological challenges that maybe in play.

"It means," she says, "that by mentoring people and offering meaningful information transfer we're beyond the awful 'monkey see, monkey do' school of training so many organisations are offering as their solutions."

She says attendees included qualified process owners as well as CIOs and others in senior management positions - with a growing band of ICT service management professionals, service desk and project managers also queuing up.
