NTMPS deploys Cognos-powered extranet to over 3 000 training managers across the US

US Department of Defense division selects Cognos for scalability, ease of use.
Johannesburg, 03 Sep 2002

Navy Training and Management Planning System (NTMPS), owned and operated by the Chief of Naval and Training, has implemented a solution from Cognos that gives over 3 000 Navy training managers access to mission critical on manpower, personnel and training (MPT) issues.

Cognos is the world leader in business intelligence (BI). Organised by warfare area, NTMPS is a comprehensive information management system that serves as a central repository for MPT information. Cognos` powerful multi-dimensional analysis solution enables Navy managers to report on and analyse data pertaining to funding, facilities, personnel, manpower, equipment, and training courses. This data is accessible anytime, anywhere via a secure extranet, enabling Navy personnel to make rapid decisions and take immediate action.

"Cognos offers the industry`s most comprehensive business intelligence solution, built to handle the information needs of today`s largest organizations, including various agencies of the US Department of Defense," said Dave Laverty, senior vice-president, global marketing, Cognos. "The breadth and depth, scalability, and usability of the Cognos solution ensure that users of NTMPS can share mission-critical data interdepartmentally, ultimately improving and strengthening management of Navy training."

NTMPS

NTMPS is the Enterprise Data Warehouse for the Chief of Naval Education and Training, integrating data from over 30 legacy systems to provide a major decision support system for Navy training managers. It currently supports six individual datamarts reflecting different requirements for warfare communities. NTMPS operates in a thin client-server environment that meets the current needs of most analysts. However, it is also being fielded in a Web-based version that will be integrated with the Navy`s Task Force Web and Navy Marine Corps Intranet projects. NTMPS also includes a separate Web-based Electronic Training Jacket that permits Navy active duty or reserve personnel to view their training, certification, and education accomplishments -- the "intellectual capital" -- that they bring to the US Navy.
