Nu Metro is showcasing select 2010 Soccer World Cup matches in three dimension, at 14 of its cinemas countrywide.

Nu Metro Cinemas said on Friday it had signed a licence agreement with Fifa for the 3D public exhibition rights for live transmissions of the games in SA, in association with SuperSport and DStv.

“This will be a chance for the public to replicate the experience of actually being in one of the stadia,” says Mark Harris, content executive for Nu Metro Cinemas.

“These matches will be supplied in the immersive 3D technology, made popular by the most successful movie of all time, Avatar, late last year,” says Harris.

Participating cinemas include Emperor's Palace, Montecasino, Clearwater Mall, The Glen, Bedford Centre, Hyde Park, Menlyn Park, Pavilion, Galleria, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk, Riverside, Loch Logan and Walmer Park.

In May, Fifa said the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) was ready to broadcast the event in 3D, a world first for the tournament.

It said 25 matches would be broadcast in 3D, starting with the opening game on 11 June and the final on 11 July. 3D broadcasts will be done at five of the 10 stadiums, namely Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and Soccer City and Ellis Park, in Johannesburg.

There will be eight 3D cameras in operation at each match and a total team of 100 providing 3D coverage of the marches.
