With the recent merger of the Technikons of Pretoria, North Gauteng and the North West, the new Tshwane University of Technology(TUT) was created.
Along with the fan-fare and excitement of a newly established institution, many logistical problems emerged.
One of the major and most pressing challenges facing the university was the merging of old and creating of new exam timetables. After thorough research on solutions available in the market, the university selected Integrear Abacus with their O! Exam solution.
According to Rentia van Wyk, assistant registrar examination services, the O! Exam solution has been fantastic. Its many advantages have impacted positively on the students." She proudly says that "the university can now issue an exam timetable to students when they register for a course. In the past they only received their timetable a month before exams commenced."
Other advantages cited by van Wyk and Karen Kok, examination advisor directly involved in working with the solution, are its ease of use ,the excellent and on-going back-up and help they are receiving from Abacus and the fact that O! Exam has drawn and worked with data from the 3 existing ITS systems and compiled a new and complex timetable. "It really is amazing," says van Wyk," with Abacus and O! Exam, we can now compile a timetable according to course structures and not have to wait for students to first register for a course. The university really has spent their money well with this excellent investment."
The o! suite of products consist of o!Timetable, o!Exam and o!Booking. o!Timetable is used to generate and optimize the class timetable. This powerful tool enables tertiary institutions to generate and optimize their class timetable to ensure that all resources are utilized optimally. It is especially useful where the current merging of campuses are necessitating the consideration of several "What if" -scenarios.
o!Booking is an ad hoc booking system that can be used separately or in collaboration with the other two products. All bookings or requests for bookings are made over the web and if necessary, confirmed by the owner of the venue.
Abacus is currently the market leader with installations of one or more of the products at University of North West (PUK), University of the Free State, University of Johannesburg (RAU), Tshwane Institute of Technology, University of the Western Cape, Durban Institute of Technology and the University of Venda.
