Obsidian to unveil new corporate identity at first LinuxWorld

Johannesburg, 16 May 2005

Obsidian Systems has announced that it plans to make a big splash at SA`s first LinuxWorld conference and exhibition, as it celebrates 10 years of Linux and open source advocacy in the South African market and an accompanying new corporate image it will sport entering a new decade.

Says managing director of Obsidian, Muggie van Staden: "It`s hard to believe that Obsidian has reached the point in its lifecycle where it is known as a veteran of the South African Linux market. We think 10 years of successful operation in any market is strong achievement and in celebrating 10 years` worth of focus on the Linux and open source markets, we have incorporated something old and something new into a more modern corporate image that we believe will serve us well in the coming decade."

Not wanting to let the cat out of the bag completely, Van Staden says some exciting things will be take place on Obsidian`s stand during the course of the week.

"Our stand will play host to thought-provoking talks from our experts on business topics that include the top seven reasons customers should certify their technicians as Red Hat Certified Engineers (RHCEs), why customers should be comfortable with paying for Linux solutions and combating today`s threats of spam using open source software; technical topics like installing and managing Linux net boot PCs, making best use of LDAP infrastructures and setting up content management with Drupal; and more open source community focused topics that include free as in speech and a decade of open source.

"There will also be demos and practical explanations taking place at our stand over the four days of the LinuxWorld exhibition, most notably of these a notebook computer configured with the best the Linux and OSS worlds have to offer.

"This configuration will be aimed at truly demonstrating the enterprise readiness, functionality and visual appeal that has made Linux not only a viable, but in many cases better alternative than the proprietary platforms for the desktop market," Van Staden says.

Van Staden says a further two notebooks will be present on the stand and these will be used for more technical demos, which he says there are aplenty.

"We are extremely positive about the quality of attendee this exhibition will attract," Van Staden says, "and what will make this show particularly valuable to attendees is the fact that Obsidian`s stand will be surrounded by the two Linux heavyweights, namely Red Hat and Novell, not to mention the applications heavyweight in the Linux space, namely Oracle.

"So besides dropping by the Obsidian stand to find out a little more about some of the real world solutions we are bringing to market, attendees will be able to speak to us together with our partners and find the answers to a full range of Linux questions," Van Staden concludes.
