Oc'e implements corporate restructuring

Shaping the company - shaping the future
Johannesburg, 11 Dec 2002

Oc'e, the pioneer of innovative printing solutions, has reshaped its organisation to respond to the evolving demands of the markets it serves. The new business divisions tie in with the changes at work on today`s marketplaces: the blurring of technology boundaries between products, the growing significance of networked computing, dedicated software solutions and the opportunities of new media. Oc'e is now placing a clear focus on customised turnkey solutions, and new additional emphasis on professional services.

Oc'e hopes the stronger focus on market segments and synergies in product development will take the company into the top three in every market it serves, and push up revenue and profit by at least 10% annually.

The former Document Printing Systems (DPS) and Production Printing Systems (PPS) divisions have merged to create the new Digital Document Systems (DDS) division. DDS is subdivided into corporate and commercial printing, software and professional services and facility services. The DDS division is headed by Jan Dix, who will be based in Venlo and Poing. There is no change to Wide Format Printing Systems (WFPS). This segment is already highly market-focused owing to the nature of its client base.

Digital Document Systems (DDS) - seven in one

Oc'e has defined seven dedicated sections for its market segment orientation: Graphic Arts, Marketing Services, Digital Newspaper Network, Quick Printers and Copy Shops, Finance, Telcos and Utilities, Public Services and Education, and Industry and Trade. Four of these departments are assigned to the commercial printing side of the business, whose customers include mailing companies and service bureaus, commercial printers and publishers, and the graphic arts industry:

Graphic arts: This is one of the world`s biggest markets, and digital printing is fast carving out a position alongside traditional printing techniques. Digital book printing and technical documentation are part of this segment, and print-on-demand is another key activity. Oc'e`s sheet-fed digital presses are ideally equipped to deliver the productivity and flexibility this market requires, also for short runs. In fact, Oc'e has the industry`s largest portfolio of sheet-fed and Web-fed digital presses for graphic arts users, plus the PRISMA+POD software for end-to-end workflow management.

Marketing services: Oc'e`s offering for mailing companies comprises hardware, software and consulting services. These include marketing concepts and promotional tools such as client presentations, product training, and roadmaps for selling and decision-making.

Digital newspaper network: In its role as a provider of infrastructure and Oc'e print sites, Oc'e is primarily addressing newspaper publishers who are seeking to take their newspaper to press virtually simultaneously at multiple locations worldwide. The challenge in this highly specialised segment is to co-ordinate and distribute newspaper print volume between publishers and distributors around the world. Oc'e`s response to this challenge is the Digital Newspaper Network (DNN).

Quick printers and copy shops: To serve this growth market, Oc'e has combined its new cutsheet digital presses with software and finishing equipment, creating solutions that help people in this segment meet their business challenges. An essential element in developing such systems is the PRISMA workflow management software.

The second major area, corporate printing, takes care of customers in banking and insurance, public administration and trade and industry:

Finance, telcos and utilities: As a provider of turnkey solutions, Oc'e can offer customers in this segment a broad range of services, from consultancy and systems integration to professional support. The portfolio includes printers with Oc'e CustomTone colour technology (for continuous-feed printing with spot colour for corporate logos or sections of text), plus smart scanning and OCR solutions. Oc'e PRISMA software keeps the workflow on track, no matter how complex.

Public services and education: The superb flexibility of Oc'e product solutions makes them ideal for use in public administration. The modern production systems and techniques provide the essential freedom of choice for users to turn out a variety of print products efficiently and economically.

Trade and industry: Oc'e offers specialised high performance printing systems for trade and industry - for instance, systems for printing customised freight documents that can also address remote distribution points and branch locations. Or systems for scanning and registering business documents in the company mailroom: after scanning, documents are classified with software such as Oc'e DOKuStar and then either archived in electronic form or routed to the right departments as editable information.
