Oc'e printer installed after Drupa viewing

Johannesburg, 13 Jan 2010

When the Shave & Gibson Group saw the Oc'e VarioStream 8550 in action at Drupa, the international print trade fair held in Germany, the security printing and packaging manufacturer knew that it had to have one. An Oc'e customer since 2001, Shave & Gibson already had an Oc'e PageStream 235, which is still printing cheques for the group, with very little downtime, says general manager Jim Short.

Shave & Gibson is a privately owned company manufacturing packaging and security printing products for the South African and African markets. The head office and factories are based in Durban, seven kilometres south of the city in the industrial suburb of Mobeni, KwaZulu-Natal. Having been in business for 28 years, the company has a reputation for uncompromising quality and excellent service, and expects the same from its own service providers.

Short says: “We have purchased what is, in our opinion, the most modern and technologically advanced high-speed continuous laser printer on the market for the production of MICR documents. During the demonstration that we saw at Drupa, we were very impressed with the improvements and advancements that Oc'e has made since we purchased our first and very successful Oce Pagestream 235.”

The Oc'e VarioStream 8550 Web printer offers print speeds up to 707 A4 pages per minute in simplex two up mode, setting completely new standards in speed and non-stop printing capabilities.

The Oc'e VarioStream 8550 even supports a triplex operation, so for example, you can print two different colours on one side of a page and a third colour on the back, while still running at 1 000 pages per minute. Its wide 19.5-inch path, pinless and pinfeed paper applications and the range of substrates it supports, make it the printer of choice for a huge range of jobs. New ZG4 LED imaging and Super Cell technology that allows printing of 256 grey levels combine with excellent toner transfer via a transfer roller to give you crisp graphics quality for your images, texts or graphics.

The Oc'e VarioStream 8550 is primarily being used for MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) cheque printing, although the system's Quick Change Developer Station means that it can also be used to print other documents that don't require MICR toner or that require spot colour. The machine can also be used for applications such as bar coding or variable data applications, such as transaction documents.

Looking forward, the Oc'e VarioStream 8000 systems have a modular design that can easily and economically be extended at any time. They can be run as a duplex or triplex printing systems by adding print engines as well as an increase in speed of up to 344 feet per min. So, should Shave & Gibson's future needs dictate, they can easily expand their operation with minimal disruption to productivity.
