Oc'e, as a digital print equipment provider, earns a large part of its turnover from the presentation of images on paper. The increasing use of paper is in itself not sustainable due to its negative impact on the use of energy, raw materials and water. It is therefore of paramount importance to redefine the notion of “document” as not principally being print on paper, and also to adapt business processes to the use of electronic documents. (Oc'e Sustainability Report 2007)
* Oc'e offers customers document management products and services that improve the efficiency of the document workflow and thus save costs and prevent unnecessary prints.
* Oc'e offers products that are energy efficient in order to save costs and prevent global warming.
* Oc'e designs products with their reuse in mind, thereby minimising waste at the customer's site.
* Oc'e offers systems that excel in low emissions to guarantee a healthy and safe working environment at its customers' offices.
* Oc'e invests in its personnel in order to be able to offer its customers help from the best people.
Although sustainability is moving up on the public agenda, it is still not in the top five buying criteria for most of Oc'e's customers. Reliability, productivity, quality, cost, safe investment, and ease of use are considered to be of greater importance. At the same time, these customers are creating a considerable impact through the paper and energy they use in operating printing systems. A 2006 study among Oc'e customers showed, environmental criteria related to paper and energy consumption do have some influence on buying behaviour. Regarding the environment, it turned out that customers care most about wasted prints, reducing energy consumption, reusing materials and minimising emissions in the working environment.
Against this background, Oc'e has chosen to focus its sustainability activities on areas where customer needs and sustainability benefits go hand in hand.
