Old malware can affect Vista

Microsoft has confirmed Vista can be affected by malware from 2004, but argues this is not a flaw in the operating system.

vendor Sophos reported last week that Microsoft's Vista is vulnerable to at least three pieces of widespread malware - labelled Stratio-Zip, Netsky-D and MyDoom-O by Sophos. Two of these date back to 2004.

However, because the execution of code relies on user interaction and social-engineering techniques, Microsoft has denied this is a flaw.

Phishing worm rips through MySpace

MySpace users are being warned to be on their guard after security experts discovered a malware-infected video file designed to steal personal information from subscribers, reports PC Authority.

A worm has been embedded in a QuickTime MOV file which, when viewed using Explorer, can enter the user's PC as a JavaScript file (js.js).

The worm alters the user's MySpace page to spread itself, and redirects any attempts to log-in to a plausible looking fake site.

Cyber attacks growing more targeted

An anti-virus practitioner warns that hackers are turning to precise methods to steal company . The number of malware attacks, targeted at specific companies has increased, he says.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finnish anti-virus company F-Secure says targeted attacks, where companies receive only a couple of malware-infected e-mails from criminals instead of thousands, was "an interesting new phenomenon".

"Instead of the attacker sending out millions of e-mails with infected attachments to random recipients, the attack might send just five e-mails with infected attachments only to one single company," said Hypponen.
