Olicom hosts first certification workshop in Africa

The first training course and workshop designed to prepare candidates for the Olicom Certified Engineer (OCE) and Olicom Certified Network Specialist (OCNS) practical examinations were held in Johannesburg recently.

Hosted by wholly owned Olicom subsidiary Olicom Africa, the 10-day course was conducted by visiting Olicom specialist engineer Martin Kaier.

Kaier swapped his Copenhagen classroom for the Olicom Africa boardroom to hold a series of in-depth, intensive training workshops for technical support and sales staff employed by local Olicom dealers and VARs.

"Twenty candidates entered the programme with eighteen writing the acceptance exams," says Kaier. "Their papers will be processed in Denmark, together with their project assessments, and the results will be made known shortly."

Successful candidates will become the first to hold Olicom career certifications in South Africa.

"The OCE certification is the highest attainable certification level and represents at least four years of on-the-job experience, in addition to the knowledge gained in Olicom training workshops," he says.

Olicom Africa country manager Nick Muller says there is a growing demand world wide for more trained computer networking experts:

"Our Olicom certification programme enables candidates to be certified at various technical proficiency levels on both ATM, Token Ring and Ethernet routing and switching technologies - as well as switching solutions across the disciplines of network design and support.

"Olicom ensures that candidates receive the most up-to-date knowledge, reflecting the latest trends in the networking industry," says Muller, who adds that Olicom has embarked on a programme to increase the number of trained support personnel in South Africa in a move to keep pace with Olicom`s strengthening position in the local marketplace - and the increasing acceptance of Olicom products here.

Olicom will be hosting two similar workshops within the next twelve months, open to both VARs and end users. Candidates should apply to Olicom Africa on (011) 784-8990 for a reservation.
