Olicom`s new ATM adapters are among the first in the industry to comply with the PC98 and Server98 industry initiatives, and feature full support for Winsock2, enabling LAN applications to take advantage of ATM`s quality-of-service capabilities.
"This gives network managers an important assurance of reliability in deploying ATM in their enterprise networks, says Olicom Africa country manager," Nick Muller.
ABR is an intelligent traffic flow control mechanism, unique to ATM, that works to identify and dynamically alleviate congestion at any point in the ATM network.
"Support for ABR in the network adapter is an essential component for the implementation of advanced traffic management across the entire enterprise network," explains Muller. "Olicom`s new ATM adapters support both methods of ABR flow control, Explicit Forward Congestion Indication (EFCI) and Explicit Rate (ER)."
ABR/ER, the newest and most efficient method of traffic management, has been designed to handle the specific characteristics of legacy LAN traffic, and is seen as a critical capability for the effective integration of ATM into traditional Ethernet and Token-Ring networks.

The newest additions to Olicom`s award-winning line of ATM adapters, the RapidFire 6161 ATM155 ABR Adapter (UTP) and the RapidFire 6162 ATM155 ABR Adapter (Fibre), provide a fourfold increase in channel capacity over the Company`s previous generation of RapidFire ATM Adapters.
The RapidFire 616x series supports up to 4096 virtual channel connections (VCCs), making them ideally suited for server applications.
Olicom`s new RapidFire ATM Adapters feature integrated support of ABR in hardware, as well as in software, to ensure the instant responsiveness of the ABR flow control mechanisms, necessary to address the constant and extreme fluctuations in bandwidth usage in a production ATM environment.
The new ATM adapters feature full support of all of the ATM Forum`s TM (Traffic Management) 4.0 specifications. In addition, the RapidFire 616x series features an optimised PCI interface and SAR (segmentation and reassembly) design, producing a dramatic boost in performance with minimal CPU utilisation.
