Olympics gets dedicated apps

With the Olympic Opening Ceremony mere days away, organisers, cellphone manufacturers and even news agencies have introduced mobile apps to help spectators get the most out of the Games and stay up to date with results, wherever they are.

According to the official site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there are three free official mobile apps: the Official London 2012 Join In app, the Official London 2012 Results app and an official mobile game.

Apart from the official apps, there are a host of independent apps, and news companies, including BBC and Reuters, have also released Games-specific apps.

Join in

London 2012 Olympic organisers say the Join In app lets users plan their experiences of the Games, with full and up-to-date event listings. The app includes spectator information, photos and interactive maps.

Users can also share their experiences of the Games as the app is integrated with Facebook, Twitter and FourSquare, allowing users to tweet, upload photos, post to their walls and check-in.

The Join In app is available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry, and can be downloaded for free here.

Get the results

According to organisers, the Official London 2012 Results app provides users with the latest news, schedules and results for all Olympic and Paralympic sports. The app lets users follow specific countries or even tailor the results and news updates they receive.

The app also includes details of sports, medal tables and athlete profiles.

ScoreMobile, which provides live sports scores, will also provide full coverage of the 2012 London Olympics results. The app allows users to enable push notifications, either by team or for selected games.

ScoreMobile can be downloaded free for BlackBerry, Android, and iOS.

Live action

The BBC Olympics app lets users watch up to 24 live streams of the Olympic Games, as well as key highlights and medal moments. According to BBC Sport, the app provides live and on-demand video via 3G and .

The app also provides coverage of the Games, including the latest stories, daily live text commentaries, schedules and results.

The BBC Olympics app can be downloaded for free on BlackBerry, Android and iOS versions 5.0 and above.

Reuters says the Reuters Olympics London 2012 app gives users access to live Olympics photos captured by the agency's award-winning photographers. According to the company, the app will also include subtle editorial content, medal tables, event schedules and results, beginning with the Olympics Opening Ceremony, on Friday, 27 July.

The app can be downloaded for free for iOS.

Play the game

The Official London 2012 mobile game lets users play Olympic-style games, including Archery, Double Trap Shooting and 110m Hurdles, which are set in authentic London 2012 venues.

Free mobile versions of the game can also be downloaded for iOS, Android and BlackBerry.

The Samsung: Take Part 2012 app lets users play 3D and augmented reality sports games, and also lets them challenge their Facebook friends in each of the events. According to the company, users can also earn medals for their countries, which will be displayed in the app and on Samsung Mobile's Facebook page.

The app also lets users take a virtual interactive tour of the Olympic Stadium and other official venues, test their Olympics knowledge, and keep up with the latest news about the Games.
