Durban police have arrested four men accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of rands via online fraud.

Yesterday, Durban central police station commissioner Bala Naidoo said the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested the men following leads from the public.

The men were in possession of about 36 stolen ATM cards, computer equipment of an unspecified value, CDs, payslips, passports and identity documents at the time of arrest.

The four men may not be named yet, as they have not made a formal plea.

According to Naidoo, it is believed the men committed "widespread fraud to the value of hundreds of thousands" of rands.

Naidoo could not explain the men's modus operandi, but said it is believed they created fake online bank accounts using the details from ATM cards and other documents found in their possession.

Forensic investigators from the SAPS office in Pretoria have been brought in to investigate the case further.

Naidoo says, based on the ongoing investigation, the police might make more related arrests some time in future.
