Online recruitment 'is tops`

Online job boards have generated more CV applications than any other recruitment channel including newspapers, a recent study shows.

According to Top-Consultant.com`s "2004 Recruitment Channel Report", future behaviour will show most candidates looking for a new job through personal referrals, then online job boards, followed by agencies, corporate Web sites and finally newspapers.

Kris Jarzebowski, MD of local online recruitment CareerJunction, says the research is corroborated with from both the US and UK.

"The Association of Online Recruiters states that the growth of online recruitment in the UK has been phenomenal, with more than 300 dedicated recruitment businesses using the Internet as the principal medium," he says.

"According to the 'National Online Recruitment Survey (Winter 2004)`, 45% of job-seekers use the Internet as their preferred method of looking for a job, 75% have applied for a job online and 59% have obtained an interview as a result."

In addition, consultancy ClassifiedIntelligence says online job sites have ended the newspaper and press monopoly with the migration of up to 10% of the advertising that used to appear in newspapers.

"As a segment of the recruitment industry, online recruitment holds its own in terms of economic worth," says Jarzebowski. "IDC, a global market intelligence and advisory firm in the IT and telecommunications industries, forecasts the world market will be worth $13 billion by 2005.

"CareerJunction conservatively estimates that it has contributed over R40 million towards the recruitment industry over the last year alone. This is as a direct result of placements made by clients using CareerJunction tools."

He says there are many common misperceptions, one of which relates to the quality of candidate that uses recruitment sites.

"Investigations by Totaljobs.com, a leading UK job board, reveal that over a third of online job-seekers are looking for work at management and executive level."

Jarzebowski says CareerJunction conducted its own survey with its recruitment agency client base in November. Key findings showed that most activity takes place at management and mid-career level, in line with the UK statistics.
