In light of increasing cellphone and mobile device , OpenHand has focused on better in version 4 of its mobile e-mail software.

Every month, as many as 15 000 handsets are reported to be stolen, says OpenHand, and with them goes valuable stored information, which could compromise corporate security.

The latest version of OpenHand has security features such as RSA SecurID, a two-factor security authentication model. This relies on a user`s password or PIN and an authenticator or token, which acts as a "key".

In addition, information resides on the server, rather than the device, allowing companies to govern the access and storage of data on their handsets. It also means information is not lost along with the device.

A snapshot function to view e-mails, calendar and contact folders offline is also new to v4.

"With the growing uptake of mobile technology in SA, we can expect a shift towards more remote and flexible business. The challenge facing companies is to ensure vital business information is kept safe," says Sigurdur Bjornsson, CEO of OpenHand Software.
