OpenOffice.org 1.0 shares StarOffice 6.0 code

Johannesburg, 20 May 2002

The OpenOffice.org community (www. openoffice.org) has announced the availability of OpenOffice.org 1.0 - an open, multi-platform, multi-lingual office productivity suite now available for free download.

OpenOffice.org 1.0 shares the same code base as Sun's just-released StarOffice 6.0 software - and like StarOffice - is a fully featured office suite that provides a near-drop replacement for Microsoft Office.

OpenOffice.org 1.0 offers software freedom, enabling a free market for service and support, while Sun's StarOffice 6.0 offers 24X7 fee-based support and training for consumers and businesses.

Known as the largest open source project worldwide, OpenOffice.org offers more than 7.5 million lines of code. And to date, over 4.5 million downloads of earlier versions of OpenOffice.org 1.0 have taken place.

Migual de Icaza, founder of the GNOME project, comments: "OpenOffice.org may be the most important open source project right now.

"People will try it and see they can get everyday work done without costly IT expenditure. Open source software can - in a low risk way - work for them and be an even better solution."

Stefano Mattielllo, managing director of Sun Microsystems, adds that OpenOffice.org 1.0 is a true reflection of the developer community's commitment towards the promotion of open source software - which is greatly beneficial for developers worldwide.

"Our StarOffice 6.0 software release is now based on a full service and support business model, which is ideal for businesses, while OpenOffice.org still gives developers the option to download the software for free," says Mattiello.

The OpenOffice.org community has in less than two years, grown to more than 10 000 volunteers, working together to build the leading international office suite that runs on all major platforms and provides access to all functionality and data.
