OPTI-NUM solutions announces local availability of MATLAB Student Version

Johannesburg, 12 Feb 2003

Continuing with the long-standing commitment to provide students with advanced technical computing tools, OPTI-NUM solutions has announced the local availability of the MATLAB Student Version.

The MATLAB Student Version includes all the latest updates to The MathWorks flagship products, MATLAB and Simulink, and is available for the Windows, Linux and Mac OS X platforms.

The MathWorks is the leader in educating tomorrow`s scientists and engineers, and more than 250 000 students, researchers and instructors in over 3 500 universities and colleges worldwide use MATLAB and Simulink for technical computation, visualisation, programming, modelling and simulation.

"MATLAB Student Version is an increasingly valuable tool to help students master key concepts in mathematics, science and engineering," said Gilbert Strang, professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Synchronising the latest professional version of MATLAB with Macintosh and Linux will be useful to professors and students worldwide."

MATLAB Student Version is a complete software package that includes MATLAB 6.5, Simulink 5, and the Symbolic Math Toolbox. With MATLAB 6.5, students can take advantage of MATLAB`s new JIT acceleration technology that speeds complex engineering and scientific applications, in some cases, hundreds of times faster than in previous versions. Simulink 5 provides access to multi-domain capabilities for modelling, simulating and analysing mechanical, electrical power and wireless systems. A number of application-specific companion products are also available for students.

"The MathWorks has deep roots in the academic community, in fact, educators were the first to recognise the potential of MATLAB," says Cleve Moler, chief scientist and co-founder of The MathWorks.

The MATLAB Student Version will be available from selected campus bookstores from February 2003.

In addition to the release of MATLAB Student Version, The MathWorks will provide the global academic community a wealth of resources with the recent launch of the Education Web Site (www.mathworks.com/education). The Student Centre offers students step-by-step tutorials that outline how to get started using MATLAB and Simulink, links to global job opportunities that require MATLAB skills, and information on companion software. The Faculty Centre, a resource for educators, provides links to MATLAB-based course materials and recommended product groups, as well as listings of the more than 500 MATLAB-based textbooks currently in print.
