Optimise your mobile workforce: Put your enterprise in the rep`s pocket

OUTfield delivers unique on-the-move efficiency

A new solution created by Artec Computer Systems and Oakwell Solutions will cost-effectively enable field personnel such as consultants and technical road warriors improve efficiency, deliver better customer service and submit accurate reports.

Dubbed OUTfield, the solution is based on the Microsoft Windows Server platform in the back office - handled by Artec. The platform is leveraged by a Microsoft .NET mobile component developed by Oakwell Solutions, which resides on the PDA of field personnel and communicates with enterprise applications.

Notes Andrew Tucker, CEO of Artec: "Typically field workers have to enter data collected in the field once they return to their office. In addition to the time wasted on filling out time sheets and reports, this has opened the way to inaccurate reporting which could ultimately result in billing inaccuracies and dissatisfied customers."

The OUTfield solution addresses these issues with readily available mobile hardware running the Microsoft PocketPC 2002 and PocketPC 2003 operating system.

"OUTfield takes advantage of these technologies to create an affordable, packaged solution that integrates directly into existing enterprise applications such as financial systems, CRM systems and ERP solutions using .Net-enabled Web services," says Shane Coetser, Technical Director of Oakwell Solutions.

He explains that OUTfield has a small installed component on the PDA that uses GPRS (generalised packet radio service) to remotely communicate with the back-office.

"With OUTfield, your service representatives can track service calls, record time spent at the client site and enter comments about their visit while on-site, saving a great deal of time and creating a more accurate record of the field worker`s daily activities. The representative can also access data residing on your back-office systems - such as checking stock availability, call history, or even reviewing previous issues, enabling him to go into any meeting fully prepared," continues Coetser.

OUTfield also functions without being connected via wireless or GPRS, saving businesses money by reducing the need for full-time connectivity, and providing the same performance even when network coverage is unavailable in remote locations.

Collected data can either be transmitted to head office applications immediately, or, if connectivity is unavailable, the data can be synchronised when convenient. Timesheets can be completed on the spot, alleviating the hassle of the consultant`s least favourite activity, while the mobile worker has an instant view into enterprise systems to check on important information that contributes to better customer service.

Addressing security concerns, the two companies have also introduced a series of measures designed to protect information from compromise should the OUTfield-enabled device fall into the wrong hands.
