Oracle SA will team up with Linux, developer of the fastest growing operating system, at Comdex South Africa at Gallagher Estate in October.
The two will share a stand and Oracle will demonstrate its latest offering, Oracle8i Release 2 on Linux. This release provides dot-coms and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) with a reliable, scalable and secure Internet database based on Linux.
"The growth of Linux as a server operating environment has been impressive," says Francois Marais, product manager of Oracle Development Tools for SA. "Linux, however, still has not gained broad acceptance as an enterprise operating environment. Oracle`s offering will help Linux take its place in this environment.
"Oracle8i Release 2 on Linux is an open-source answer for companies looking to establish a powerful presence on the Web. Oracle is one of the few vendors that supports key Internet technologies like Java and XML in the database, and with its bundled availability on the inexpensive Linux platform, Oracle is a leader in providing essential e-business technology for start-ups," maintains Marais.
He says one of the reasons Linux is the fastest growing operating system is that it is the choice platform for developers developing new applications worldwide. In the last month alone, developers downloaded over 285,000 copies of Oracle8i for Linux from Oracle Technology Network (OTN).
"It`s a major milestone for Linux, the open-source developer community, and Oracle to offer all of our major applications and the Oracle Internet Platform software for Linux. We are seeing demand for our software for Linux surpass all of our expectations.
"With Oracle iAS for Linux, the first enterprise-level application server for Linux, customers have a complete, enterprise-level software stack to quickly and cost-effectively build and deploy Linux applications. Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, featuring Oracle Portal-to-Go, is also available for Linux.
Oracle`s Portal-to-Go, a component of the Oracle Internet Platform, is a server product that enables any existing database and Internet application to be made accessible from virtually any device connected to the Internet. For example, WAP smartphones, Wireless PDAs such as the Palm VII, standard phones connected to Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) systems, modem equipped personal organisers, and set-top boxes.
"Using Portal-to-Go, mobile operators, content providers, and wireless ISPs may create their own wireless portal, and small to large corporations may seamlessly extend the reach of their existing enterprise systems to mobile users," says Marais.
"Oracle is now the only vendor to provide all of its newest, enterprise-class software for Linux," Marais points out.
Oracle E-Business Suite, a fully integrated e-business applications suite, was also made available on Linux recently. The Suite includes Oracle`s Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Order Management, Financials, human resources, manufacturing, procurement, projects and supply chain offerings.
The Oracle8i database is designed as an Internet development and deployment platform, extending Oracle`s technology leadership in the areas of data management, transaction processing and data warehousing. Built directly inside the database, powerful Internet features help companies and developers build Internet-savvy applications that lower costs, enhance customer and supplier interaction, and provide global information access across platforms and across the enterprise.
Also on exhibit will be interMedia, Audio, Image and Video, a component of the Oracle8i interMedia product. It enables Oracle8i to manage image, audio, and video in an integrated fashion with other enterprise information, through object types.
"Oracle8i interMedia extends Oracle8i reliability, availability, and data management to multimedia content in Internet, electronic commerce, and media-rich applications," Marais says.
In addition, to be featured at Comdex will be Oracle`s Portal Framework, an out-of-the-box framework that brings together, in a unified portal setting, all corporate information sources and applications. It employs reusable components, called portlets, to point to any information source, including applications, databases and other portals.
"It enables the interaction with all other Web applications, such as CRM and ERM, plus bespoke developed applications like Oracle Forms, Reports, Discoverer and JDeveloper. JDeveloper provides a complete Java development environment for developing and deploying applications ranging from Java and HTML clients to server-based business components for the Internet computing platform.
Marais says for more information on the above products, users can visit: http://technet.oracle.com or www.Oracle.com. He adds that from 15-18 November there will also be an Oracle User Group at the Wild Coast Sun, at which speakers from Oracle the UK and US will be present.
