Oracle Corp, the largest provider of software for e-business, and Apple have announced certification of the Apple Macintosh client on the Oracle E-Business Suite.
This certification makes the Oracle E-Business Suite the first suite of Internet-enabled applications available to Apple customers. The Oracle E-Business Suite currently supports Mac OS 9, and will be available next year for Mac OS X, Apple`s next generation operating system.
Oracle E-Business Suite is a full suite of Web and Java-based applications that allow companies to put their customer interactions, internal operations and supply chain on-line, and enables quick linkages with both suppliers and customers for a seamless business process.
"There are thousands of Mac users in South Africa, especially in the fields of graphic arts, web development, education and administration. This Macintosh client certification means students, educators, creative professionals and consumers will now be able to access the Oracle E-Business Suite using the Macintosh browser and MRJ (Apple Macintosh Runtime for Java)," says Marc Gower, marketing director of Oracle SA.
"All Oracle applications work seamlessly with the Mac today. Mac customers will now be able to use Web-enabled, integrated applications for their creative solutions and administrative tasks.
"Using only a browser, Apple customers can be up and running on OracleSalesOnline.com within minutes and have immediate access to enterprise business applications and sales automation capabilities.
"Apple`s education and business customers will be able to manage their organisations using Oracle`s e-business applications. For example, university faculty and administrative staff using Macs will be able to access Oracle`s enterprise Financial and HR/Payroll systems, in order to streamline administrative processes and improve service."
The Oracle E-Business Suite is currently available for Mac OS 9.0.4 with MRJ 2.2.3. Certification and support for the upcoming Mac OS X is scheduled for 2001.
Gower adds that Oracle support services have also been expanded to support the Macintosh client, providing reliability, availability and overall satisfaction for customers.
Oracle and Apple will conduct a series of joint e-business initiatives in key Apple market segments, including education and small business.
For the education market, they plan to embark on a higher education seminar series to the top 100 colleges and universities to showcase the technology. In addition, Oracle plans to incorporate the Mac as one of the standard sales demonstration platforms for the Oracle E-Business Suite.
