Oracle continues Sun's investment
Oracle's drip feed of promises on Sun Microsystems' software has now extended to middleware, open source, and tools, according to The Register.
The database giant said it will continue Sun's investment in the company's open source Java application server.
"Oracle plans to invest in aligning common infrastructure components and innovations from Oracle WebLogic Server and Glassfish Enterprise server to benefit both Oracle WebLogic Server and GlassFish Enterprise customers," the company says.
Ford unveils open source platform
Ford has clarified that its open platform is still in the pre-alpha testing stages, reports CNET News.
Ford is testing an open source platform that could be used in the future to develop applications that make use of Sync to connect to social networks in the cloud.
Ford's representatives say the system is built on a Robotics Studio platform by Microsoft that has been layered with an open source cloud computing platform developed by Ford that will allow rich interactions with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Open source shift draws praise
The White House's recent deployment of the Drupal open source content management system for its Web site has created a stir among industry observers, states Government Computer News.
There are speculations that the move may herald a shift towards more government use of open source, social media and emerging semantic Web technologies.
Tim O'Reilly, head of O'Reilly Media, praised the White House for its choice of open source technologies, suggesting the government could save money by going with open source.
