Oracle Database 10g receives 2004 Product of the Year Awards from eWEEK, InfoWorld

Oracle Database 10g honoured for performance, administration and overall value
Johannesburg, 01 Feb 2005

Oracle announced today that Oracle Database 10g received two prestigious product of the year recognitions from leading technology publications, eWEEK and InfoWorld, as well as a successful review from CRN magazine.

Oracle also received DM Review`s 2004 Readership Award as the overall winner in the Databases and Stores category. The honours recognise Oracle`s leadership in developing innovative management products that meet customer needs.

Oracle Database 10g delivers the clustering and workload balancing, high availability and management automation required to establish enterprise grid computing infrastructures. Released in 2004, Oracle Database 10g offers enhanced features to increase the ease of development while simplifying the management of the database. Features such as Automatic Storage Management, which virtually eliminates the need to manually configure and tune database storage, and advanced XML capabilities distinguish Oracle Database 10g from competitive offerings.

In its annual "Technology of the Year Awards 2005", InfoWorld named Oracle Database 10g "Best Database of the Year". After conducting an extensive hands-on product review, InfoWorld wrote: "If DB2 8.2 was groundbreaking, the Oracle Database 10g release was earthshaking." The review specifically noted the database`s "grid management" capabilities, as well as a number of automated administrative features that simplify configuration and management of complex computing environments and reduce DBA workload for handling large infrastructures. InfoWorld`s description of Oracle Database 10g as "sophisticated simplicity" succinctly captures the value of the product.

eWEEK Labs recognised Oracle Database 10g as one of its "Top Products of 2004". The publication`s review highlighted rich-media handling, XML capabilities and automated diagnostic tool features in Oracle Database 10g that enable companies to maintain advanced applications across a variety of platforms. According to eWEEK Labs: "Oracle delivered innovations on all levels with its grid-enabled database engine, auto-tuning utilities and service-oriented development tools."

The "product of the year" awards are the latest in a long list of industry accolades. In November 2004, CRN magazine completed a review of the database, with the publication`s Test Centre giving a resounding recommendation. CRN Labs praised Oracle`s newest database release: "Simply put, Oracle 10g is by far the most sophisticated database on the market today."

"We take great pride that our Oracle Database 10g innovations are being recognised by so many industry publications and customers," said Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice-president of Database Server Technologies, Oracle. "Oracle Database 10g is the only database that delivers the benefits of grid computing to the enterprise."
