Oracle has released Oracle VM 2.2, its latest server virtualisation software, in a move it says enables customers to accelerate deployment and simplify management of enterprise applications.

The announcement was made at Oracle OpenWorld, in San Francisco, this week.

The product also allows customers to run their centres in an environmentally-sustainable and efficient manner, while lowering costs, says Oracle.

According to Wim Coekaerts, VP, Linux and virtualisation engineering at Oracle, this release allows customers to capitalise on the latest advancements in server virtualisation technology, to better manage their virtual environments and reduce both cost and power consumption in the data centre.

He says the product features the latest Xen-based hypervisor, Xen 3.4, and boosts performance enhancements for customers running Intel Xeon processor 5500 series and six-core AMD Opteron processors. “It also features new CPU power management and memory management.”

By leveraging the latest Xen 3.4 hypervisor, the product provides broader hardware support, and better performance, scalability and for both hardware virtualised and para-virtualised guests, Coekaerts explains.

“Performance can be improved for hardware virtualised guest operating systems, including Microsoft Windows,” he adds.

The product also claims to provide more efficient CPU power management, enabling greener computing and cost savings.

“Resource management has been enhanced in Oracle VM 2.2 by allowing users to set the scheduling priority for virtual CPUs in virtual machines and cap the maximum percentage of CPU time each individual VM can access,” Coekaerts says.

"Customers deploying virtualisation want solutions that boost system performance, yet are easy to deploy, saving time and money," adds Jim Ganthier, VP, marketing, industry-standard servers at HP.

He says the new product takes advantage of features for HP ProLiant G6 servers, enabling customers to get increased performance from their Windows and Linux virtual machines, quickly and easily.
