Oracle has created a dedicated public sector division to African countries and offer support to governments at national, regional and local level.

The announcement was made at an Oracle public sector conference in Nairobi, where David Were, of the Kenyan communications department, urged ICT companies to partner with African governments to improve the quality ICT services to government agencies.

Oracle`s East African regional manager Taroon Japal said the new business unit was formed to help governments in their efforts to accelerate delivery of services and infrastructure.

"The Oracle Public Sector group is the largest industry-specific development organisation inside Oracle, covering every aspect of government and public administration, from social services and to enforcement and national defence," he said.

According to Japal, IT is fundamental to helping governments achieve the benefits of sharing information and services between departments by unifying systems, allowing for interdepartmental collaboration, and gaining a single view of the business of government.

Although he said many governments have yet to achieve this ideal, there is a growing consciousness that greater co-operation among departments will mean better service delivery and lower running costs.

Japal said Oracle is working with more than 30 African governments to create an enterprise architecture to support IT integration.
