Oracle has announced three new Internet Platform products - Oracle 8i R3, Oracle Internet Application Server and the Internet Development Suite - in an effort to realign its technology strategy.
The third release of Oracle 8i, the company`s database technology, marks the second major update of the product in 12 months. Oracle has focused on enhancements for Java and XML support, but the most notable change is the architecture that Oracle expects smaller users to adopt when using the product.
The company says organisations will be able to run their business logic entirely within the database, without having to build a middle-tier application layer.
For those who prefer to stick with the traditional n-tier architecture, the Internet Application Server 8i (IAS) will deliver the usual middle-tier functionality. The product includes a caching service termed Oracle 8i Cache, the Apache Web server, and the Oracle E-Business Suite. A portal service provides e-business portal software designed to collect, manage and serve-up personalised software services in a Web browser.
Thanks to the Java base, code can be ported between the database and IAS, depending on where the customer would like to run the business logic.
Oracle Internet Developer Suite includes Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Portal, Oracle Forms Developer and Designer, alongside Oracle`s business intelligence tools, Oracle Discoverer and Oracle Reports.
Oracle has simplified its entire product line by eliminating virtually half the products offered on its price list. These products will now generally be included at no additional cost as standard features of the Oracle 8i database and the Oracle E-Business Suite 11i enterprise applications, as well as the new Oracle Application Server 8i and the Oracle Internet Developer Suite. In addition, Oracle has announced that its support offerings have been enhanced and simplified.
